The Koutoubia minaret rising above palm trees and gardens under a blue sky in Marrakech

A good Marrakech one day itinerary starts early at the Jardin Majorelle, spends the late morning in the medina and its souks, keeps the hottest hours for a palace or a calm garden, uses the late afternoon to see the wider city (ramparts, Menara or Palmeraie), and ends with sunset and dinner on Jemaa el-Fna. It is a full day, but it works because it follows the rhythm of the city and the sun. Here is the plan hour by hour, with options for different interests.

The plan at a glance

Time Where Why then
08:30 to 10:00 Jardin Majorelle Cooler, fewer visitors at opening
10:00 to 10:30 Koutoubia and its gardens Easy stop on the way to the medina
10:30 to 13:00 Souks and Ben Youssef area Shops are open, alleys are shaded
13:00 to 14:30 Lunch and rest Peak heat
14:30 to 16:00 Bahia Palace or Kasbah (Saadian Tombs, El Badi) Indoor shade and courtyards
16:00 to 19:00 Ride: ramparts, Menara or Palmeraie Softer light, wider city
Sunset Rooftop near Jemaa el-Fna Golden then blue hour
Evening Jemaa el-Fna food stalls The square at its liveliest

Times are indicative: opening hours of monuments and gardens change, so check them locally before you go.

Morning: Jardin Majorelle and the Koutoubia

Start in Gueliz with the Jardin Majorelle, the garden of cacti, bamboo and bougainvillea around a villa painted in intense cobalt blue. It is one of the most visited places in the city, so aim for the first time slot; booking ahead on the official site is often recommended, and ticket rules change, so check before you go. The Musée Yves Saint Laurent is next door if fashion interests you.

From there, head to the Koutoubia Mosque, the city's great landmark. Non-Muslims cannot enter, but the gardens beside it are open and the minaret is impressive from every angle. It also marks the edge of the medina, a perfect transition to the next part of the day.

Late morning: souks and the old medina

Walk from the Koutoubia to Jemaa el-Fna and dive into the souks to the north. The covered lanes are shaded and full of craftsmen: leather, lanterns, carpets, spices, babouches. Getting a little lost is part of the experience; landmarks like the square and the Ben Youssef area help you find your way back.

Worth a stop in this part of the medina:

  • Ben Youssef Madrasa, a former Quranic school known for its carved cedar, stucco and zellige tiles.
  • Le Jardin Secret, a restored riad garden, quiet in the middle of the souks.
  • Rahba Kedima, the small spice square, good for a coffee on a terrace.

If shopping, take your time, compare and bargain politely; it is part of the culture.

Midday and early afternoon: rest, then a palace

Lunch and rest

From late spring to early autumn, the early afternoon is the hottest part of the day. Have a long lunch in a riad restaurant or a terrace, then rest. If you are staying in a riad, this is the moment to enjoy its patio. A traditional hammam is another good way to spend the hottest hour.

A palace in the Kasbah

Once the sun begins to drop, visit one of the historic sites in the southern part of the medina:

  • Bahia Palace: courtyards, painted ceilings and gardens, a 19th-century residence.
  • Saadian Tombs: richly decorated funerary chambers in the Kasbah, near Bab Agnaou.
  • El Badi Palace: vast ruins with storks nesting on the walls.

Pick one or two; doing all three in one day is tiring. Entrance fees and opening hours change, so check locally.

Late afternoon: see the wider city by motorcycle

This is where a one-day plan often falls short: the most beautiful places outside the medina are far apart. A motorcycle ride fills the gap. In three hours you can follow the ramparts and their gates, cross Gueliz and Hivernage, stop at the Menara gardens with the Atlas in the background on clear days, and continue to the Palmeraie as the light turns golden.

With Warider, you choose your duration and a meeting point (Jemaa el-Fna in front of Café de France, the Koutoubia gardens entrance, the Jardin Majorelle main gate or Place du 16 Novembre in Gueliz). The price is fixed before you confirm and paid in cash to the rider at the end.

Ride length Price What fits in the afternoon
2 hours 350 MAD Ramparts, Menara, back to the square
3 hours 480 MAD Ramparts, Menara and Palmeraie

Sunset and evening on Jemaa el-Fna

End the ride near the square and climb to a rooftop terrace for sunset. As the light fades, Jemaa el-Fna fills with food stalls, musicians and storytellers. Dinner at the stalls is an experience in itself: grilled meats, harira soup, snails, fresh bread. Choose a busy stall where food is cooked in front of you.

Practical tips for a one-day visit

  • Wear comfortable shoes: medina streets are uneven and you will walk a lot.
  • Carry cash in dirhams: many small shops, stalls and taxis do not take cards.
  • Dress respectfully: covered shoulders and knees are appreciated in the medina.
  • Ask before photographing people, especially performers on the square. For the best frames of the day, see our list of photo spots in Marrakech.
  • Stay hydrated and plan shade in the middle of the day.

One day in Marrakech goes fast, but with an early start, a rest at midday and a ride to link the far-apart sights, you will leave with a real feel for the city, and probably a wish to come back.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough to see Marrakech?
One day is enough for the highlights: the Jardin Majorelle, the medina and souks, one palace, the Koutoubia and an evening on Jemaa el-Fna. You will not see everything, so choose what matters most to you.
What should I not miss in Marrakech in one day?
The Koutoubia, Jemaa el-Fna at dusk, a walk through the souks and one historic site such as the Bahia Palace or the Ben Youssef Madrasa. Add the Jardin Majorelle if you can book an early slot.
How do I move between sights in one day?
Walk inside the medina and use a petit taxi or a motorcycle ride for longer hops such as Majorelle, the Menara or the Palmeraie. A 3-hour Warider ride in Marrakech costs a fixed 480 MAD, paid in cash.
Do I need to book tickets in advance?
For popular sites such as the Jardin Majorelle, booking ahead is often recommended. Ticketing, prices and opening hours change, so check the official sites before your visit.
