Palmeraie Marrakech: What to See and How to Visit
The Palmeraie is Marrakech's great palm grove, a green and quiet escape just outside the medina. Here is what to expect, what to do there and how to enjoy it at golden hour.

The Palmeraie of Marrakech is a vast palm grove on the north-eastern edge of the city: thousands of date palms, quiet roads, small villages, luxury villas and open views toward the Atlas. It is the easiest way to feel nature without leaving Marrakech, and it is best visited in the late afternoon, when the light turns golden and the heat drops. Below is what to expect, what to do there and how to get there and back.
What the Palmeraie is
The Palmeraie stretches over a wide area outside the medina walls, between the Route de Fès and the roads leading north and east. A popular local legend says the palms grew from date pits left by the soldiers of the Almoravids, the dynasty that founded Marrakech in the 11th century. Whatever the truth, palms have been part of the city's landscape for a very long time, watered historically by khettaras, traditional underground channels that brought water from the foothills.
Today the Palmeraie mixes several worlds:
- Palm groves and open land, with tracks crossing between the trees.
- Small villages (douars) where families live and farm.
- Hotels, villas and resorts, some of them well known, behind long walls.
- Activity operators offering camel rides and quad excursions.
Over recent decades, there have been efforts to protect and replant the palm grove, which suffered from drought and urban growth. Please respect it: stay on tracks, do not climb palms and take your rubbish with you.
How to get there
The Palmeraie is too far from the medina for a comfortable walk, especially in warm months. The main options:
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Petit taxi | Easy to find in the city | You see little, need to agree on the return |
| Organised activity | Camel ride or quad included | Fixed schedule, often in groups |
| Motorcycle ride | Flexible stops, open views, combine with ramparts | One passenger per ride |
| Walking | Free | Long, dusty, hot |
The main road loop through the area is known as the Circuit de la Palmeraie. Its roads are generally quiet compared with the city centre, which makes it pleasant on two wheels.
Things to do in the Palmeraie
Ride or stroll among the palms
The simplest pleasure is to move slowly through the groves, stop where the light is beautiful and walk a short stretch on a track. There is no single viewpoint; the beauty is in the rhythm of trunks and shadows.
Camel ride
Camel rides are the classic Palmeraie activity, usually 30 minutes to a couple of hours with an operator. Prices and conditions vary between operators, so ask clearly before you start and check how the animals are treated.
Quad excursions
Several operators run quads in and around the Palmeraie. If you choose one, look for proper safety equipment and an experienced guide.
Art and gardens
The area has a few cultural spots, such as a private museum and garden dedicated to contemporary Moroccan art. Opening hours and entry conditions change, so check locally before going.
A break by the pool
Some hotels offer day access to their pools or restaurants. Policies vary a lot, so call ahead.
Best time to visit
- Late afternoon to sunset: the best light, cooler air and long shadows. This is also why the Palmeraie appears on our list of the best sunset spots in Marrakech.
- Early morning: quiet roads and fresh air, good if you want calm before visiting the medina.
- Midday in summer: avoid it; there is little shade on open tracks.
In winter, clear days often give views of the snowy Atlas behind the palms. In summer, bring water and protect your neck and arms from the sun.
Visiting the Palmeraie by motorcycle
A motorcycle is a natural way to discover the Palmeraie: you cover the distance from the medina quickly, ride along open roads with the wind, and stop wherever you like for a photo or a short walk. With Warider you ride pillion behind a verified local rider who knows the area, wearing the approved passenger helmet every rider carries.
A good plan for a 3-hour instant ride (480 MAD, fixed price, paid in cash at the end):
- Meet at the Koutoubia gardens entrance or at Place du 16 Novembre in Gueliz.
- Follow the ramparts toward Bab Doukkala and the north of the medina.
- Head out to the Palmeraie and ride the circuit, with one or two stops among the palms.
- Return at golden hour and finish near Jemaa el-Fna.
For a shorter outing, a 2-hour ride (350 MAD) can reach the Palmeraie and come back with fewer stops. Local riders also design tours with mapped routes and weekly time slots; see them on the Marrakech tours page. For more on how riding pillion works, read our motorcycle tour Marrakech guide.
Practical tips
- Sunglasses and a scarf or buff help with dust on dry days.
- Closed shoes and long trousers are best on a motorbike and on dusty tracks.
- Bring water, especially from May to September.
- Respect private land and the villages; ask before photographing people.
- Carry cash for drinks, activities and your ride.
The Palmeraie is not about a single monument: it is about space, light and a slower pace, a perfect counterpoint to the busy medina. Go late in the day, take your time and let the palms do the rest.
