Wide sandy beach of Agadir with the seafront and hills in the background

The main things to do in Agadir are walking the long beach promenade, exploring the Marina, climbing the Agadir Oufella hill for the view over the bay, and browsing the stalls of Souk El Had. Agadir is a relaxed, sunny city built around its beach, but it has more character than many visitors expect. In this guide you will find what each spot offers, a simple plan for one day, and how to see the city on a motorbike tour led by a verified local rider.

Agadir in a few words

Agadir sits on Morocco's southern Atlantic coast, at the edge of the Souss region. After the earthquake of 1960 the city was largely rebuilt, which explains its wide avenues, modern buildings and planned seafront. The result is a city that feels easy-going and spacious, with a mild climate that draws visitors much of the year.

It is also a good base. The surf villages to the north, the Souss valley and the Anti-Atlas are all within reach, although those are day trips beyond the city itself. Inside Agadir, the highlights are close enough to link in a few hours.

The beach and the promenade

Agadir's crescent-shaped beach is the heart of the city. The sand is wide and the bay is sheltered, which makes it popular with families. Running alongside it, the promenade (the Corniche) is lined with cafés, restaurants and gardens.

When to go:

  • Morning: quiet, cool, ideal for a walk or a run.
  • Late afternoon: the promenade fills up with families and couples, and sunset over the bay is the classic moment.
  • Evening: cafés stay busy and the seafront remains lively.

Swimming conditions on the Atlantic change with the tide and the waves; follow the flags and any local advice on the day.

The Marina

At the northern end of the beach, Agadir Marina is a modern harbour lined with yachts, shops, cafés and restaurants. It is a pleasant, calm place to stroll, have a coffee facing the boats and watch the sun go down.

The main entrance of the Marina is also the Warider meeting point in Agadir, so it is a natural place to start or end a tour.

Not far away, the fishing port shows a more working side of Agadir. Fishing is an important part of the local economy, and the port area is known for simple grilled fish stalls. Ask locally about the best time to go.

Agadir Oufella: the view over the bay

Above the port rises Agadir Oufella, a hill crowned by the remains of the old kasbah. Most of it was destroyed in the 1960 earthquake, and the site is today a place of memory as much as a viewpoint. On the hillside you can read the large Arabic inscription meaning "God, Country, King", visible from much of the city.

From the top, the whole bay opens up: the beach, the Marina, the port and the city stretching inland. It is one of the best spots in Agadir for photos, especially in the late afternoon. Access options change (road, footpath and other ways up), so check what is running when you visit.

Souk El Had

Souk El Had is Agadir's great market, a huge walled souk with many entrances and countless stalls. It is less touristy than the souks of Marrakech, and locals do their real shopping here.

What you will find:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables from the Souss valley, dates, nuts and olives.
  • Spices, local honey and products made from argan, typical of the region.
  • Clothes, shoes, household items, crafts and carpets.

Tips: go in the morning when it is calmer, carry cash, and take your time comparing. Opening days and hours can vary, so check locally before you go.

A simple one day plan

  1. Morning: Souk El Had while it is calm, then a coffee in town.
  2. Midday: lunch near the fishing port or along the promenade.
  3. Afternoon: a motorbike tour from the Marina, up to Agadir Oufella and along the coast.
  4. Sunset: back on the promenade or at the Marina for the evening light.

A few last tips: the sun is strong even when the breeze feels cool, so bring sunscreen and a hat. Dress a little more modestly in the souk and the city than on the beach. If you travel during the holy month, read visiting Morocco during Ramadan first, and if you are heading north later, our guide to things to do in Tangier is a good next read.

Agadir is easy to enjoy at your own pace. Mix the beach with the market and the hilltop view, and you will see a side of the city that many beach holidays miss.
