Things to Do in Tangier: Kasbah, Medina and Cap Spartel
Tangier sits where Africa faces Europe. Here is what to see, from the Kasbah and Grand Socco to Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves, and how to fit it into a 1 to 3 hour ride.

The top things to do in Tangier are wandering the Kasbah and the Medina, starting from the lively Grand Socco, taking in the views across the Strait of Gibraltar, and riding out to Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. Tangier is compact in the centre but its best viewpoints are spread along the coast, so a short motorbike ride with a local is a smart way to see both sides of the city. Here is what to see and how to plan it.
Tangier at a glance
Tangier has always been a crossroads. It faces Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar, it was an international zone for part of the twentieth century, and it attracted writers, painters and musicians from around the world. Today it mixes an old walled medina, a European-style new town, a modern marina and a fast-growing coastline.
The city is easy to like: sea views from almost every hill, fresh breeze, and a pace that feels calmer than Marrakech. It is also hilly, with steep lanes in the old town, which is worth keeping in mind when you plan your day.
The Grand Socco and the Medina
The Grand Socco (officially Place du 9 Avril 1947) is the hinge between the new town and the old. It is a busy square with a fountain, palm trees and the historic Cinema Rif, and the gate into the Medina is right there. Next to it, the Mendoubia gardens offer shade and old trees.
From the Grand Socco, walk down into the Medina:
- Petit Socco, a small square lined with cafés, once the social centre of the old town.
- Narrow lanes with tailors, spice shops, bakeries and small grocers.
- Old legations and consulates, reminders of Tangier's international past.
The Medina is best explored on foot. The Grand Socco is also the Warider meeting point in Tangier, so you can walk the old town first and meet your rider afterwards, or the other way around.
The Kasbah and its viewpoints
At the top of the Medina sits the Kasbah, the old fortified quarter. Its whitewashed alleys, blue doors and quiet squares are among the most photographed corners of the city. Inside you will find the former sultan's palace, Dar el Makhzen, now a museum (check opening times and fees locally).
The real reward is the view. From the Kasbah walls and terraces you look straight over the port and the Strait. On a clear day the Spanish coast appears on the horizon. Nearby, the cliff-top Café Hafa has served mint tea on its terraces for generations and is a classic stop for a slow break.
Other viewpoints worth a stop:
- Terrasse des Paresseux, on Boulevard Pasteur in the new town, with its old cannons facing the bay.
- The seafront promenade along the bay, popular in the evening.
Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves
West of the city, the road climbs through green hills and leafy residential areas before reaching Cap Spartel, the north-western tip of Africa. Here the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, and the lighthouse stands above the meeting point of the two seas. It is one of the most beautiful spots in northern Morocco, especially in the late afternoon.
A little further south along the Atlantic coast are the Hercules Caves. Legend links them to the hero Hercules, and the famous sea-facing opening is often said to look like a map of Africa. Entry details change, so check locally.
This coastal stretch is where a motorbike really helps: the views open up at every bend, and you can stop wherever the light is good.
Tangier on a motorbike: what to expect
Warider offers same-city motorcycle experiences with verified local riders. Tangier is in soft launch, which means fewer riders are online for now and the service is more limited than in Casablanca or Marrakech:
| Duration | Fixed price (Tangier) | Suggested plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | 250 MAD | New town viewpoints and the bay |
| 2 hours | 350 MAD | City viewpoints plus Cap Spartel |
| 3 hours | 480 MAD | Cap Spartel, Hercules Caves and a coffee stop |
- Rides last 1 to 3 hours (no 4 hour option yet) and run from 10:00 to 19:00.
- Meeting point: Grand Socco (Place du 9 Avril 1947).
- Booking: with Find a Rider you choose the duration, interests, start time and meeting point. Warider sets a fixed price and sends the request to nearby riders; the first rider who accepts is reserved for you for 5 minutes while you confirm. Because there are fewer riders during the soft launch, give yourself some flexibility on timing.
- Payment: cash to the rider at the end of the ride. Nothing is charged online.
- Safety: one passenger, an approved passenger helmet on every ride, and riders verified for identity, licence, insurance and motorcycle documents. More on the safety page.

Tips for visiting Tangier
- Walk the Medina, ride the coast. The old town is made for walking; the viewpoints and capes are made for riding.
- Go west in the afternoon. Cap Spartel is lovely in the late light, and with rides ending at 19:00 it is wise to start your coastal trip early enough.
- Bring a windproof layer. Tangier is breezier than the south, and the coast road can be cool.
- Wear good shoes. Kasbah lanes are steep and sometimes slippery.
- Check the weather for views. Haze can hide the Spanish coast; clear days are worth waiting for.
- Travelling during the holy month? Read visiting Morocco during Ramadan for timing tips.
Continuing south? Our guide to things to do in Casablanca covers the next big city on the Atlantic coast.
Tangier is a city of views and stories. Spend the morning in the Kasbah lanes, the afternoon on the road to Cap Spartel, and you will understand why so many travellers stayed longer than planned.
